Japanese Language Schools

In Shimane prefecture there are eight Japanese language schools where anybody can study. In some cases, you can study for no tuition fee or at very little cost. If you want to go to a language school, you need to apply. Contact each school for further information.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test

The "Japanese Language Proficiency Test" is carried out in order to measure and acknowledge the Japanese language level of non-Japanese-speaking people. Taking the test is a good idea for foreigners who are studying Japanese to measure their Japanese language level. Contact the "Association of International Education" for further information. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test has previously been used as the entrance examination for Japanese universities. However, since June 2002, the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)" has been adopted

Eligibility In principle, non-native speaker of Japanese
Application Period From the beginning of August to the beginning of September every year
Examination Fee 5,200 yen (Including tax)
Examination Date The first Sunday in December
Examination Location  The prefectures of Hokkaido, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.※ If you live in Shimane, the nearest place to take an examination is in Hiroshima.
Notification of Results In the middle of February, in the following year, all examinees will receive their score reports and successful examinees will also receive a Certificate of Proficiency.

Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

Until now, the "Japanese Language Proficiency Test" was used as the entrance examination for international students applying for Japanese universities. From June 2002, the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students" has become the standard entrance examination. If you want to enter a Japanese university, you have to take the examination based on the university you want to enter, and obtain a certain result. For further information, contact the "Association of International Education, Japan" who conducts examinations for Japanese university for international applicants.

Eligibility International students who want to study in Japanese universities
Examination Subjects Depending on the university you want to enter and the course of study you want to pursue, the examinees select the appropriate subject tests: These are taken from "Japanese as a Foreign Language", "Science (physics, chemistry, and biology)", "Japan and the World", and "Mathematics (course 1 or course 2)". Examinees may not choose to take both the "Science test" and the "Japan and the World test".
Application Period Examinees may get a bulletin (Cost is 500 yen) sold at major bookstores throughout Japan and fill in the application form. Send it to the Association of International Education, Japan (AIEJ).
Examination Fee One subject: \5,200
Two subjects or more: \10,400
Examination Date Twice a year
Examination Location The prefectures of Hokkaido, Miyagi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Aichi, Ishikawa, Toyama, Kyoto, Shiga, Osaka, Hyogo, Hiroshima, Okayama, Fukuoka, and Okinawa.
※If you live in Shimane, you may take an examination in Hiroshima or Okayama which is the nearest place.
(The Examination location may change depending on the examination date).
Notification of the Results The AIEJ will notify examinees of their scores one and a half months after their examination. The AIEJ will begin responding to score inquiries from universities at the same time.
