Child Allowance

Parents or fosterers who have a preschool child and whose income of the previous year is under a certain amount can receive a "Child Allowance". However, foreigners must have alien registration to receive the allowance and their eligibility for the allowance depends on their resident status and period of stay. In order to receive the Child Allowance, you have to apply at the same municipal office where you applied for alien registration. The Child Allowance will be provided the month following the month during which you applied, up until the time your child enters elementary school. Child Support Allowance

Mothers or fosterers who take care of children under 18 years who do not live with their father because of the father's death, divorce, or other applicable reasons, and whose income of the previous year is under a certain amount can receive a "Child Support Allowance". However, foreigners must have alien registration to receive the allowance and their eligibility for the allowance depends on their resident status and period of stay. The amount of the Child Support Allowance depends on their income the number of children who are being supported. In order to receive the Child Support Allowance, you have to apply for it from the municipal office where you applied for alien registration. The Child Support Allowance will be provided until the first March 31st following the child's 18th birthday. If a person has not applied for the allowance within 5 years of being eligible, it will not be provided.

Public Assistance

Public Assistance is provided for those who suffer from illness, injury, old age to the extent that they cannot live on their own. It is a service provided to enable you to be able to live life as normally as you can. However, you can only qualify for Public Assistance if you cannot make a living using all the abilities and resources you have available. Public Assistance is a system for those who have Japanese nationality, but foreigners who have the following resident status and are poor in living can receive the assistance in the same way as the one provided for Japanese. If you want to consult or apply for the Public Assistance, contact the municipal office where you applied for alien registration.

In the case that a permanent resident has a Certificate of Alien Registration and cannot receive the sufficient assistance or support from a consulate of their own country.

Special Child Support Allowance

Parents or fosterers who take care of physically and mentally handicapped children of ages 20 years or younger with a handicap of medium degree, and whose income of the previous year is under a certain amount can receive "Special Child Support Allowance". If the income of the previous year is over a certain amount, the receipt of the Special Child Support Allowance is limited. However, foreigners must have alien registration to receive the allowance and their eligibility depends on their resident status and period of stay. In order to receive Special Child Support Allowance, you have to apply at the same municipal office where you applied for alien registration or at the Public Welfare Office which has jurisdiction over your area. Handicapped Child Welfare Allowance and Special Handicapped Person Allowance

A person who comes under the following conditions and whose income of the previous year is under a certain amount can receive the "Handicapped Child Welfare Allowance" or the "Special Handicapped Person Allowance". However, a person who has entered an institution for the handicapped is not eligible. Furthermore, foreigners must have alien registration to receive the allowance and their eligibility for the allowance depends on their resident status and period of stay. Handicapped Person Welfare Facilities

If physically or mentally handicapped people need life skills or job training, or cannot live independently at home, they can receive rehabilitation to become independent by entering or regularly attending a welfare facility.
